Suncore proudly participated in AGC of Utah’s “Build the World, Girls!” Construction Camp this week, supporting efforts to introduce high school-aged girls to hands-on careers in the construction industry. Held June 23–24 at the AGC Training Center in Salt Lake City, the event brought together young women, industry professionals and educators for two days of immersive learning and empowerment.
Suncore team members led a breakout session focused on underground utilities, guiding campers through a take-off of a mock site plan. The girls learned how to read construction documents, calculate materials and visualize utility layouts—skills essential to any infrastructure project.
One of the highlights was the opportunity for each participant to operate a mini excavator, giving them a hands-on experience rarely accessible at this age. Under expert supervision, the girls safely got to move traffic barrels around in a timed event.
“Watching these girls light up when they took the controls was incredible,” said Alexia Cervantez, a heavy equipment operator in Salt Lake. “It’s not just about machines—it’s about confidence, curiosity and helping them see themselves as builders.”
A big thank you to Rikki Thompson, Connor Stoddard, Austin Hall and Dylan Duckworth for lending their expertise.
Participants left energized and empowered. “It was so cool to see the blueprints and then actually operate the machine myself,” said one camper. “This made me want to work in construction someday.”
Organized by AGC of Utah, the camp is designed for girls aged 15–18 and offered a variety of skill-building sessions led by women professionals in the field.
