The majority of Suncore’s mines produce sand and gravel for purchase by consumers. However, one mine in Levan, Utah, produces a lesser-known product called gypsum.
Gypsum has a wide variety of applications; however, it is most commonly used in the manufacturing of portland cement. Suncore supplies its gypsum to cement plants throughout the Utah region.
Whether purchasing gypsum for the first or hundredth time, there are growth opportunities in several areas:
- Construction: Gypsum can be used for building drywall, gypsum board, sheetrock, non-load bearing interior walls, partition walls, cavity walls, skin walls, and pillar casing indoors.
- Agriculture: Gypsum helps some soils better absorb water and reduces erosion to create soil stabilization. It also cuts down on phosphorus movement from soils to lakes and streams. It is an excellent fertilizer supplement.
- Food: It is commonly used as an FDA-approved food additive that is referred to as “calcium sulfate.” Gypsum also improves the quality of fruits and vegetables.
- Medical: It is used as a color additive for drugs and cosmetics. Dentists use gypsum plaster to make models of gums, and surgeons use it to repair fractures.
Additionally, crude gypsum is used in a fluxing agent and as filler in paper and textiles.
Suncore sells some of the finest gypsum on the market—consistently over 95% pure and white in color. It is available for purchase in three main sizes: 3-4 inches, under 3 inches, and in fines.
